Baseball splits on the road with Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team salvaged a split with Penn College after a solid pitching performance from Ben Berkel in game two against Penn College on Saturday afternoon. Berks came to life in the end of game won, but the Wildcats held on for a 5-1 win. Game two was a 5-3 victory for the Nittany Lions.

In the second game, Berkel forced the Wildcats to hit into double plays in the first two innings of the game. The sophomore right-hander pitched a 1-2-3 third inning and working out of jam in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, the Nittany Lions plated four runners to stake Berkel to a 5-0 lead. In the bottom half of the fifth, Penn College got back-to-back singles and the runners each moved up on a passed ball. A single drove in one run and a sacrifice fly scored the other before Berkel retired the next two batters to escape the inning. Berkel set the Wildcats down in order in the sixth and gave up one run in the seventh to exit the game with a 5-3 lead. Berkel allowed seven his and three runs (two earned), while striking out there in 7.0 innings.

Dale Murphy came in and shut the door with a pair of consecutive 1-2-3 innings. The righty forced three fly outs in the eighth and then struck out two of the batters in the ninth to pick up the save.

In the fifth inning when Berks scored four runs, Bryce Stout started the rally with a one-out single to center. Nate Trovinger and Tyler McGarvey followed with singles to load up the bases. Penn College starter Chance Webb got a strikeout for the second out, but walked to Chad Evans to force in a run. Jay Pettit singled to right field to drive in a pair of runs. Evans scored on a wild pitch to add the final run of the inning for Berks.

The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning of the game. Joe Gramignano walked and was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pat Maloney. Stout followed with a single to right field to drive in Gramignano with the first run of the game.

Five batters recorded two hits, including the first four in the lineup. Gramignano, Maloney, and Stout were all 2-for-4, while Trovinger finished 2-for-5. Pettit was 2-for-3 and recorded a stolen base. McGarvey and Evans each had a hit and scored a run.

In the opening game, Berks was again snakebit by one bad inning in the field. Gramignano allowed three hits and surrendered four runs, but just one that was earned in 3.0 innings. Justin Renninger continued to pitch great out of the bullpen, allowing three hits and one run, while striking out one in 3.0 innings of relief.

Josh Hernandez went 2-for-3 at the dish with a run scored. Maloney and Trovinger both finished 1-for-3.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in a NEAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 14 at 12 p.m.
