Men's basketball falls to Cairn in home opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team dropped a 74-52 decision to Cairn University in a non-conference contest on Monday evening.

The Nittany Lions trailed 7-0 in the early going, but battled back and took its largest lead of the night at 27-21 with 5:31 to go in the first half. The Highlanders took a four-point lead in the break and extended it to 13 points with 16:37 left in the game. Berks narrowed its deficit to seven points (53-46) with 8:19 to go, but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way.

Jared Houck led the Nittany Lions with 17 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Xavian Rodriguez recorded 12 points and 14 boards, while also picking up four blocks, three assists, and a pair of steals. Monty Farmer chipped in 10 points, followed by Hassan Koroma with nine points and nine rebounds. Brody Bolyn matched Rodriguez with a team-high four blocks shots, while Koroma had two and Grant Watson swatted one.

Dashuan Cain led the Highlanders with 23 points and nine boards, while Kameron Clark had 18 points and 23 rebounds.

The difference maker of the game was the free throw line. The Highlanders converted on 33-of-37 trips to the line, while Berks only got the line 18 times and made eight of those attempts.

The Nittany Lions visit nearby Division II Kutztown University in a non-conference contest on Saturday, November 20 at 3 p.m.
