Women's volleyball opens conference play with two wins

AURORA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened United East Conference play with a pair of victories in upstate New York on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions downed host Wells College, 3-1, followed by a win of the same score over Penn State Harrisburg.

Against the Express, Berks won the opener by a 25-17 margin, but fell 25-20 in the second set. The Nittany Lions (10-11, 2-0) took care of business in the next two games by scores of 25-16, 25-14 to clinch the win.

Cassie Shoupe matched a season-high in kills with 15  and picked up 13 digs. Sarah Nichols followed with 13 kills and committed only one error to finish with a .522 attack percentage. Kayla Zelonka added 10 kills, eight digs, and two block assists. Julia Rathsam dished out 37 assists to go along with nine digs, five kills, and an ace. Marie Durkota collected a team-high 18 digs, while Natalia Perez matched her career high with 15 digs and also recorded two service aces. Abby Mattis tallied four kills, one ace, and one block assist.

Penn State Harrisburg took the first set by a 25-20 margin, but Berks answered with set scores of 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 to earn its second win of the afternoon.

Shoupe again put on a solid display as she established a new season-high in kills with 19 to go with 15 digs, four assists, and two aces. After the two matches today, Shoupe has registered double digits in kills in five straight contests and seven times this season. Zelonka followed with a season-high 16 kills and Nichols was one of her career-best after chipping in 13 kills. Nichols (.458), Shoupe (.390) and Zelonka (.355) combined for 48 kills and 10 errors for an efficient .396 hitting percentage.

Perez had a season-high eight kills to go along with eight digs and one ace. Rathsam had 48 assists, 14 digs, five kills, and an ace, while Durkota finished with a team-high 19 digs and three aces. Mattis recorded a pair of kills and an ace.

The Nittany Lions will host Moravian University on Thursday, October 14 at 6 p.m.
