Women's soccer shuts out Gallaudet

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 shutout victory over Gallaudet University in an United East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 3-7-2 overall and 3-1 in the United East, while GU drops to 1-7 on the season and 0-5 in the conference.

Berks had possession throughout the entire first half with 20 shots, none of which found the back of the net and the teams went to intermission in a scoreless deadlock.

At the 48:46 mark of the contest, Jeyda Duran crossed a ball from the right sideline that Sara Hathaway impressively deflected past the keeper using her upper body. The score was Hathaway's team-leading sixth goal of the season, while Duran recorded her team-high fourth assist.

In the 51st minute, Maddi Monka collected a loose ball and delivered a line drive over the keeper's head for a 2-0 lead.

Berks had several scoring chances after that goal. The best opportunity was by Mary King off of a free kick, but the ball smacked off the crossbar. For the game, Berks outshot Gallaudet 37-0 (24-0 on goal) and held a 10-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Savannah McNeal and Jackie O'Brien combined on the shutout, while Paige DeGraw made 22 saves and made impressive stops and catches on passes and corners.

The Nittany Lions return to action with an United East Conference contest at Penn College on Saturday, October 16 at 3 p.m.
