Women's soccer tops Penn College, 2-0

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first half and the defense held strong to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 win over Penn College in a United East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 4-7-2 overall and 4-1 in the United East, while the Wildcats drop to 5-9 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.

Emily Clapper scored an unassisted goal at the 7:24 mark of the game to put Berks ahead 1-0 in the early going. Sara Hathaway took a shot from the right side of the box and the Wildcat keeper made a diving save on, but Clapper collected the rebound and directed it into the open net. Clapper's score was her sixth goal of the season, which is tied with Hathaway for the team lead.

In the 22nd minute, Hathaway crossed a ball over to Adriana Lepera that hopped off of the defenders foot. Lepera adjusted to the deflection and knocked the ball out of midair past the keeper inside the left post. The goal was the first of Lepera's collegiate career, while Hathaway racked up her third assist of the season.

For the second straight contest, Savannah McNeal and the Nittany Lions defense recorded a shutout. McNeal finished the match with three saves to earn her fourth victory over the season. The defensive unit of Lydia Cacciola, Morgan Kline, Violet O'Donald, and Sarah Painton limited the Wildcats offense to only five shots (three on goal) the entire day.

Berks outshot the Wildcats by a 22-5 margin and held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia University for a non-conference contest on Sunday, October 17 at 4 p.m.
