Men's soccer tops Gallaudet, 3-1

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team picked up an important win, 3-1, over Gallaudet University in an United East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 2-9-1 overall and 2-2 in the United East, while GU drops to 2-7 on the season and 1-4 in conference play. Through the halfway point of the conference slate, Berks is tied with Penn College in the fourth and final playoff spot with six points. Berks has only played four conference contest, while Penn College has already played five.

Owen VanDyke got the scoring started at the 30:19 mark after a pass over the defense by Mark Pirrone. The freshman midfielder dribbled toward the keeper, who came off his line, and VanDyke just lofted the ball over the keeper and into the open net.

In the 38th minute, VanDyke struck again in similar fashion. Gleason played the ball over the defense and the keeper was off the line, VanDyke from a few yards farther out, chipped a shot over the keeper's head to give Berks a 2-0 lead.

Early in the second half, Garrett Bland crossed a ball from the left sideline to the center of the box. Jonathan Morello timed it perfectly and headed a line drive past the keeper to put the Nittany Lions up 3-0 in the 49th minute.

Berks continued playing well on both sides of the field until a foul in the box at the 71:49 mark gave the Bison a penalty kick, which Tristan Torbett converted to make it a 3-1 score.

Jose Aparicio finished with five saves in net to earn the win, while Shane Angel had eight stops for the Bison.

Berks outshot GU 19-11 (11-6 on goal) and held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Goucher College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, October 12 at 7 p.m.
