Men's soccer falls on the road to Goucher

TOWSON, MD - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 6-2 setback to Goucher College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night.

The Gophers took a 1-0 lead into the intermission and tacked on a goal on a penalty kick at 52:18. Owen VanDyke, who scored twice on Saturday, tallied a goal with an assist from Mark Pirrone to cut into the deficit. Less than 90 seconds later, Shane Gleason converted a penalty kick to even the score at 2-2 with a little of 30 minutes to play.

Goucher went ahead 3-2 on a goal in the 63rd minute, but it looked like Pirrone was going to even the score a few minutes later. The sophomore midfielder chipped a shot over the keeper's head from just outside the 18-yard box, but the ball clanked off the crossbar and was cleared by the defense. The Gophers scored moments later to take grab the momentum and tacked on two insurance goals down the stretch.

Jose Aparicio made six saves and Colin Lewis had three, while Gophers keeper Jeff Castro had eight stops.

Goucher outshot the Nittany Lions by a 21-14 margin (15-10 on goal), while Berks held a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Gleason's goal was his team-leading fifth of the season, while VanDyke recorded his fourth. The assist was Pirrone's third of the year, which is tied with Gleason for the team-lead.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn College for an United East Conference contest on Saturday, October 16 at 1 p.m.
