Nittany Lions take two in United East action

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team swept a pair of United East Conference contests on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions opened the day with a 3-0 win over St. Mary's College, followed by a 3-1 victory over SUNY Morrisville in the final match of the afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 12-14 overall and 4-0 in the United East.

Against the Seahawks (7-13, 3-3), Berks won by game scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-23.

Makenzie Shoop led the Nittany Lions with nine kills, followed by Kayla Zelonka with eight and Cassie Shoupe with six. Marie Durkota had a team-high 15 digs and Shoupe followed with 12. Julia Rathsam, who recorded 10 digs, finished with four kills and 26 assists.

In the win over the Mustangs (16-9, 4-2), Berks won 25-18 and 25-13, but dropped the third game 25-17. In the fourth set, SUNY Morrisville led 23-20 before Berks rattled off five straight points. In that run, Zelonka had two kills and Shoupe had two aces, including the final point of the game.

Zelonka turned in her best performance of the season with 20 kills to go along with three block assists. Zelonka recorded a kill on each of her first 10 attacks and finished with a .586 hitting percentage. Shoupe followed with 14 kills, 10 digs, and three aces. Rathsam handed out 44 assists and had four digs. Nichols had three block assists and one solo block, while Adriana Leon-Vazquez had two block assists and an ace. Durkota tied Shoupe for the team-lead in digs with nine, Madison Hetrick followed with nine digs and added two aces.

The Nittany Lions will host Delaware Valley University return to action with a pair of United East Conference contests on Sunday, October 24. They will face host Lancster Bible College at 1 p.m., followed by Gallaudet University at 3 p.m.
