WVB remains unbeaten in United East play

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team picked up another two wins in United East Conference play after defeating Lancaster Bible College, 3-1, and Gallaudet University, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Horst Athletic Center.

The Nittany Lions improved to 14-14 on the year and 6-0 in conference play with the two wins. Berks sits in first place in the conference standings and needs to win just one of its matches next Saturday to clinch the United East regular season championship title.

Against host LBC, Berks won the first set 25-18, but fell 25-20 in the next set. The Nittany Lions closed out the match by scores of 25-15 and 25-14 to claim the win.

Cassie Shoupe continued her stellar play, finishing with 14 kills, 11 digs, and three service aces. Sarah Nichols added 10 kills and four block assists, while Kayla Zelonka chipped in nine kills and Makenzie Shoop added eight. Julia Rathsam collected 38 assists, 11 digs, two aces, and two block assists. Marie Durkota finished with a game-high 16 digs. Madison Hetrick recorded three aces and Adriana Leon-Vazquez had two.

The next match of the day did not start out well for Berks as Gallaudet won 25-21 and 25-19 in the first two sets. The Nittany Lions got back on track with wins of 25-18 and 25-15 to carry momentum into the decisive fifth set. The final set was tied 9-9 before Berks went on a 4-0 run, but the Bison responded with three unanswered points to make it 13-12 in favor of the Nittany Lions. Berks got the next point, but Gallaudet had back-to-back kills to even the score at 14-all. Shoupe recorded a kill on the next two plays to secure the victory for the Nittany Lions.

Nichols, Zelonka, and Shoupe combined for 46 of the teams 62 kills. Nichols had a career-high 18 kills, followed by Zelonka with 15 and Shoupe with 13. Rathsam broke her own single-game school record with 55 assists, eclipsing her previous high of 52. She also added 16 digs and four aces. Shoupe had a season-high in digs (27) and aces (5). Durkota had 22 digs, while Hetrick (16) and Natalia Perez (11) also reached double digits in digs.

The Nittany Lions will host Delaware Valley University in the regular season home finale on Tuesday, October 26 at 6 p.m. Prior to the start of the match, Marie Durkota and Madison Hetrick will be celebrated with Senior Day recognition.
