Nittany Lions edge Alvernia, 1-0

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team earned its third straight shutout win after defeating nearby rival Alvernia, 1-0, in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 5-7-2 overall, while Alvernia dropped to 3-11 on the season.

Berks pressured the Golden Wolves from the start and Emily Clapper drew a foul in the box at the 5:59 mark to earn a penalty kick. Clapper converted the PK, her second of the season, to put the Nittany Lions ahead 1-0 in the early going. The score was Clapper's team-leading seventh of the season.

The Nittany Lions were able to fire off shots the rest of the way, but could not tack on anymore goals. For the game, Berks outshot the Golden Wolves by a 26-6 (12-2 on goal) margin and held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The defensive play from Lydia Cacciola, Morgan Kline, Violet O'Donnell, and Sarah Painton limited the Golden Wolves offense all day to make things easy for their keepers. Savannah McNeal and Jackie O'Brien each made one save and combined on the shutout effort. Lily Sankey finished with six stops and Brynn Brock made five for Alvernia.

Jeyda Duran recorded a game-high five shots on goal and Clapper had three.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in an United East Conference contest on Wednesday, October 20 at 7 p.m.
