Chamorro's late goal lifts Nittany Lions to win over Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Alex Chamorro tallied a late goal and Jose Aparicio finished with a clean sheet as the Penn State Berks men's soccer team won a 1-0 thriller over Penn College in United East Conference play on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 3-10-1 overall and 3-2 in the United East, while Penn College drops to 3-9-4  on the season and 1-2-3 in conference action. Berks gained three important points in the standings, as they now sit with nine points are in sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot.

In the opening half, the Wildcats outshot Berks by a 6-3 margin and held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks. Owen VanDyke put two shots on goal, but Braeden Eckard made the stop, while Aparicio made the save on all three on frame to go into the break scoreless.

The Nittany Lions came out of the break strong, Mark Pirrone recorded two shots and Shane Gleason had one in the first five minutes of action. Berks had three corners and two shots over the next 20 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.

After a Penn College foul, Aparicio made a quick pass to Ash Deery, who then drove a ball from midfield into the box. The keeper batted the ball away and a Wildcat defender failed to clear it. Chamorro collected the loose ball and sent a shot into the wide open net to put Berks ahead 1-0 at the 69:53 mark.

The offense continued to pressure and the defense allowed only one shot in the remainder of the game to earn Berks its second shutout of the season. Aparicio finished the contest with four stops, while Eckard had eight.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in an United East Conference contest on Wednesday, October 20 at 5 p.m.
