Baseball sweeps doubleheader with Clarks Summit

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The offense was banging on all cylinders as the Penn State Berks baseball team swept a doubleheader with Clarks Summit University on Day Two of the Ripken Experience. The Nittany Lions scored early and often in a 20-5 win in the opener, followed by a 16-1 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Justin Butler struck out the side in the top of the first and the offense plated four runs in the bottom half of the inning. The leadoff batter for the Defenders reached first on a Berks error, but Butler got a fly out and 4-6-3 double play to get out of the inning. The Nittany Lions (3-3) tacked on a pair of runs in the second and followed with a 10 spot in the third. Berks finished off its scoring with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Butler tossed 3.0 hitless innings and struck out four batters, without issuing any walks. Dom Mayorca made his collegiate debut, going 2.0 innings and striking out three.

Hunter Sentz went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and three runs scored, while Nate Trovinger was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Josh Hernandez recorded his first college hit with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third. He finished 1-for-1 with three walks, two stolen bases, two RBI, and three runs scored. Nick Esz had a 2-for-4 showing with two stolen bases, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Hunter Bales, Tyler Kreitz, and Justin Welch all collected one hit and scored twice. Ben Berkel was 1-for-2 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored, while Joe Gramignano finished with two walks, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.

In the second game, Ziggy Bowles made his collegiate debut with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. The freshman left-hander scattered three hits and surrendered just one run. Ben Wanner struck out three batters in 2.0 scoreless innings, while Dale Murphy had one struck out in 1.0 inning.

The offense recorded five runs in the top of the second, five more in the third, and finished up the scoring with six runs in the sixth.

Dante Salerno was 2-for-2 with three walks, two stolen bases, two doubles, four RBI, and two run scored. Mason Pennypacker finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Salerno and Pennypacker both reached 100 career hits, becoming the 13th and 14th members of the program to reach the career milestone.

Tate Yergey went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while Kreitz was 1-for-3 with a triple, three RBI, and a runs cored. Chad Evans was 1-for-1 with three stolen bases, one RBI, and three runs scored. Pat Maloney and Colin Maloney both had one hit and scored two times, while Sam Perrone was 1-for-1 with an RBI and three runs scored. Bryce Stout recorded two RBI, both coming from sacrifice flies.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a pair of games on Wednesday, March 10. They will play Bethany College at 2 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. tilt with MacMurray College.
