Baseball edged twice on Wednesday

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped a pair of contests on Wednesday afternoon at the Ripken Experience. The Nittany Lions fell to Bethany College, 16-10, followed by a 10-9 setback to MacMurray College later in the day.

Bethany scored the first eight runs of the game before the Nittany Lions plated two runs in the fifth. Berks recorded three runs in both the six and seventh innings, while adding two more in the eighth. Unfortunately for Berks, the Bison scored eight times from the fifth through seventh, highlighted by a five-run sixth inning.

Dante Salerno, Nate Trovinger, and Noah Kurtz all recorded two hits. Salerno recorded two steals, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Kurtz had an RBI and scored three times. Joe Gramignano, who finished 1-for-2 at the plate, had one RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Bryce Stout had one hit and four RBI, while Mason Pennypacker had one hit and drove in a pair of runs.

The second game of the day saw several lead changes. MacMurray scored three unearned runs in the top of the third, but the Nittany Lions countered with three of their own in the bottom half. The Highlanders plated a pair in the fourth, but Berks went ahead with another three-spot in the its half. MacMurray evened the game at 6-all with a run in the six, but the Nittany Lions scored once in the seventh for a 7-6 lead. The Highlanders took advantage of a Berks error an score four runs in the top of the eight to go up 10-7. The Nittany Lions scored twice in the eighth, but left the tying run stranded at third and then went down in order in the ninth.

Pennypacker led the Berks offensive attack, going 3-for-5 with one double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Nick Esz was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Tate Yergey finished 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and a run scored. Trovinger was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Salerno had a triple and drove in two runs, while Hunter Bales went 1-for-3 with three runs scored.

Dale Murphy allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of work, while Noah Kurtz tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the spring break trip with a doubleheader against Albertus Magnus College on Thursday, March 12. First pitch of the first game is set for 12 p.m.
