Baseball splits a pair of games at Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team split a pair of games on the first day of the Ripken Experience. The Nittany Lions (1-3) opened up the day with a 6-4 victory over Fredonia State, followed by a 7-4 setback to Catholic University later in the day.

Bryce Stout provided the offense and Alex Laudenslager pitched a gem in the win over Fredonia. The Devils (3-3) led 3-2 after three inning, but Berks plated two runs in the top of the fifth and tacked on a run in both the eighth and ninth to lead 6-3. In the bottom of the ninth, Fredonia got one run back and had bases loaded before Drew Skrocki got a fly out to center field to record the save.

Stout finished 4-for-5 with one double, one home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. He smashed his first homer with the Nittany Lions with a two-run shot in the top of the fifth to give Berks a 4-3 lead. Hunter Sentz went 2-for-5 with a stolen base, while JUSTIN WELCH was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Dante Salerno also tallied two hits and recorded an RBI, while Tyler Kreitz and Tyler McGarvey both had a hit and scored a run. Nate Trovinger and Joe Gramignano both finished 1-for-4, with Trovinger also driving in a run.

Laudenslager picked up his first win of the season after turning 8.0 solid innings on the mound. The junior right-hander scattered seven hits and allowed three runs, while striking out seven batters. He set down 14 batters in order from the end of the third inning through the start of the eighth. Skrocki finished off the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season and third of his career.

The Nittany Lions let the lead slip away late in the setback to Catholic. The Cardinals scored a run in the top of the fourth, but Berks jumped ahead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 4-1. The Cardinals (7-5) got a run in the top of the sixth, four in the seventh, and added on more in the eight to earn the win.

Ben Berkel pitched 6.0 strong innings and left the game with Berks ahead 4-2. The freshman right-hander surrendered five hits and two runs, while striking out three batters. Dale Murphy allowed one hit and one run in 1.2 innings of relief, while Ben Wanner pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Seven different players recorded hits for Berks. MASON PENNYPACKER was 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs in a double down the right field line in the fifth inning. Trovinger and Pat Maloney both had RBI singles in the fifth inning. Eric Gale and Colin Maloney each had a hit and scored a run, with Maloney also stealing two bases. Dante Salerno had one hit and a stolen base.

The Nittany Lions will play a doubleheader with Clarks Summit University on Monday, March 9. First pitch for game one is set for 9 a.m.
