Baseball drops two to McDaniel in season opener

WESTMINSTER, MD - The Penn State Berks baseball team opened up the 2020 season with a pair of losses on the road to McDaniel College. The Nittany Lions dropped the opener, 13-2, and suffered a late 3-2 setback in the second game of Saturday afternoon's non-conference doubleheader.

In the opener, Berks got on the board in the top of the first inning. Mason Pennypacker singled, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by the catcher. Pennypacker later came around to score when he and Tyler Kreitz pulled off a first-and-third double steal.

The Green Terror countered with three runs in the bottom of the second, one in the fourth, and then put things out of reach with eight runs in the fifth.

The Nittany Lions tallied their second run of the game in the top of the seventh when Bryce Stout led off with a triple and came in to score on an RBI groundout by Colin Maloney.

Dante Salerno tallied a single and Tate Yergey had a double for the Nittany Lions.

Alex Laudenslager recorded three strikeouts in two innings, while Hunter Sentz had two punchouts in 1.1 innings.

In the second game, McDaniel jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Berks evened the game at 1-all in the top of the third after back-to-back singles by Salerno and Pennypacker put runners on first and third. With two outs, Stout came through with a single to right field to bring in Salerno.

The Nittany Lions went ahead 2-1 in the fifth after a leadoff single by Salerno and an RBI double to left by Pennypacker.

McDaniel recorded a pair of runs in the bottom of sixth to go ahead 3-2. Berks had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh, but the Green Terror got back-to-back strikeouts to secure the win.

Salerno went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Pennypacker was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Stout and Chad Evans each recorded a hit for Berks.
