WBB escapes with OT win over Harrisburg

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team escaped with an 86-83 overtime victory over visiting Penn State Harrisburg in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Tuesday night.

The women's squad teamed up with the men's squad to host its annual Pink Game to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County. Donations were made at the door and the teams held a half-court competition at halftime of both games. The teams combined to raise $526.30 throughout the evening.

Harrisburg led 18-10 after the first 10 minutes of play, but Berks counted with a 25-10 count in the second quarter to carry a 35-28 lead into the halftime break. Out of the intermission, Berks outscored the visitors by 13 points (27-14) to take a 20 point advantage (62-42) into the final 10 minutes of play.

The Berks offense fell into a funk and the defense committed a slew of fouls to allow Harrisburg to quickly whittle its deficit to single-digits (63-55) with 6:07 left in regulation. Berks went back up by 10 with 5:41 left, before Harrisburg used a 12-2 run to even the score at 67-all with 1:03 to play.  The teams exchanged one point leads before Harrisburg went ahead by three (72-69) with 12 seconds left. Berks used a timeout to advance the ball and Sam Brensinger drained a corner 3-pointer to even the score at 72-all. The Berks defense got a turnover with four seconds left to send the teams to overtime.

Harrisburg knocked down a 3-pointer to open up the extra period, but Katie Armstrong drilled a long range shot on the next possession to even it at 75-all. Over the next two minutes, Harrisburg scored four points at the free throw line, while Kylie Herman had four of her own in that time to make it 79-79 with 2:26 left. Lex Schratt knocked down a mid-range jumper, but Harrisburg countered with two at the line to stay even (81-81) with 52 seconds to go. Julia Bookwalter got an offensive rebound and put back, followed by a defensive stop which followed with a 1-for-2 trip at the line by Nicole Kopcik. Harrisburg got back within one point with a layup, but Herman added two points at the line down the stretch and the defense got a couple of stops to preserve the victory.

Herman led Berks with 21 points, followed by Armstrong with 20 and Brensinger with 16. Bookwalter rounded out the Berks players in double figures with 10 points. Kopcik pulled down a game-high and career-best 17 rebounds, while Bookwalter and Armstrong each had seven. Armstrong also recorded four assists and three steals, while Bookwalter had three assists and three steals.

Jayla Galbreath recorded a game-high 22 points and five assists to lead Harrisburg. Madison Hemler added 18 points and eight boards, while Kendis Butler tallied 11 points and three steals.

The two teams will not wait long to see each other again, as Berks will host Harrisburg in the NEAC First Round game next Tuesday. Before that, Berks will wrap up the regular season with a pair of NEAC contests in upstate New York this weekend. They will face Wells College on Friday, February 21 at 7 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. tip-off at Keuka College on Saturday.
