WBB uses second half surge to top Abington

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team punched its postseason ticket after defeating Penn State Abington, 63-49, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Wednesday evening.

Berks (11-9, 6-3 NEAC South) led 7-2 in the early going, but the home squad rallied to take an 11-9 lead at the end of the first period. Berks won the second quarter by a 16-12 margin and led by two points (25-23) at the half. Out of the break, Berks dominated the third quarter to the tune of a 28-10 margin to build a comfortable 20 point advantage (53-33) going into the final 10 minutes of play. Early in the fourth, Berks extended its lead to a game-high 24 points, but Abington was able to work its deficit down to 14 points by the end of regulation.

Katie Armstrong and Kylie Herman combined for 63% of Berks' scoring output. Herman tallied a contest-high 22 points and Armstrong followed with 18. Armstrong notched a double-double after grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with her five steals and four assists. Herman recorded four boards and four steals. In addition, Herman raised her career scoring total at Berks to 981, leaving her 19 points shy of becoming the sixth member of the 1000 point club.

The duo alternated halves in which they did the bulk of their scoring. Armstrong notched all 18 of her points in the second half, 14 of which came in the third quarter run. Herman, on the other hand, posted 15 points in the first half, with 10 points coming in the second period.

Nicole Kopcik and Julia Bookwalter each chipped in eight points. Kopcik matched Armstrong with a team-high 10 boards, while also finishing with five steals. Bookwalter finished the contest with four boards and three assists. Sam Brensinger had three points, three rebounds, and three steals, while Lex Schratt and Emily Clapper both had two points and combined for five boards.

Lacy MacLachlin led Abington with 12 points, while Sydney Barrow and Laquana Nagbe both added 10 points. Barrow also had 10 rebounds, eight assists, and a pair of steals. Ashya Gaddy pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Cobleskill in a NEAC contest on Saturday, February 15 at 3 p.m. Prior to the game, Berks will honor five members for Senior Day.
