WBB uses strong fourth quarter to down Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team used a dominating fourth quarter performance to earn a 64-47 victory on the road over the University of Valley Forge in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions (4-5), playing for the first time since a win over Delaware Valley University on December 11, started out slow. The Patriots (2-6) jumped out to a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Berks outscored the home squad 17-6 in the second to tie the score at 23 going into the break. UVF scored the final five points of the third quarter to take a 42-40 advantage into the final period.

The Patriots extended their lead to five points with 8:50 left in the game, but Berks was finally ready to shake off the rust from its month long hiatus. Kylie Herman, Nicole Kopcik, and Abbie Carr to give the Nittany Lions the lead (46-45), which they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Kopcik added a layup and a free throw to cap the 9-0 run. UVF got a jumper to pull within two points (49-47), but the Nittany Lions defense would hold them scoreless over the final 5:22 of action. Kopcik notched eight of the Nittany Lions final 15 points to help secure the win.

Herman poured in a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Julia Bookwalter recorded 16 points and a game-high 13 boards, while also adding four blocks and two assists. Kopcik joined Bookwalter with a double-double after notching 13 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Armstrong and Carr each scored five points and combined for 20 rebounds (Armstrong-11, Carr-9). Sam Brensinger chipped in seven points, four boards, and two assists.

Cayleen Conrad led the Patriots with 21 points, while Alea Flowers added 10 points and 10 boards.

Berks dominated on the battle of the glass, outrebounding UVF by a 68-38 margin. The 68 rebounds ranks as the second most in a single-game in program history.

The Nittany Lions will host a pair of NEAC contests this weekend. They will face Morrisville State on Saturday, January 11 at 3 p.m., followed by Cazenovia on Sunday at 2 p.m.
