MBB falls in final seconds to Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, PA - The Penn State Berks were up by one point with 6.2 seconds remaining, but a three pointer and a couple of free throws gave the University of Valley Forge an 89-85 victory over the Nittany Lions in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions trailed 27-11 in the early part of the first half, but an 18-2 run made it a 29-29 ball game with 6:12 left in the period. The Patriots closed out the remainder of the half on a 14-6 run to lead 43-35 going into the break.

In the second, UVF built as much as a nine point lead (63-54) with 12:33 to play, but Berks erased the deficit to knot the game at 74-all with 5:57 to go. In the span of 63 seconds, Jared Houck and Jeff Lorah combined for three 3-pointers as the Nittany Lions built their largest lead of the game at six points (85-79) with 2:17 to go. Matt Altamirano tallied five points straight points to cut the Berks lead to one (85-84) with 1:33 left. Neither team was able to score, until Altamirano knocked down a 3-pointer with six seconds left to put UVF up two with an and-one opportunity. Altamirano missed his free throw, but got the rebound and was put back on the line, where he connected on both shots to put the game out of reach.

Houck finished with a career-best and team-high 25 points after going 6-of-13 from 3-point range. The sophomore guard also had seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. RJ Dixon chipped in 23 points, while notching a team-best nine boards and five assists. Xavian Rodriguez turned in a season-best 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Lorah chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Matt Martin had seven points and six boards in his collegiate debut.

Altamirano led the Patriots with 30 points and 11 rebounds, while Steven Eng added 18 points and Owen Bradford had 15.

The Nittany Lions will host a pair of NEAC contest this weekend. They will begin with Morrisville State on Saturday, January 11 at 1 p.m., followed by Cazenovia College on Sunday, January 12 at 12 p.m.
