Women's basketball downs Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team returned to the win column in convincing fashion with an 83-65 win over Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Tuesday night.

Berks improved to 9-7 overall and 4-1 in the South Division, which puts them in first place by a half-game over Penn State Harrisburg, who plays at Gallaudet University tomorrow evening. With the loss, Abington drops to 7-9 on the season and 3-2 in the South Division, which puts them in third place in the standings.

Berks fell behind 6-0 after just over two minutes of play, but quickly turned things around following a time out. They scored 10 unanswered points and Berks later scored the final eight points of the period to go up 18-9 after 10 minutes of action. Abington started out strong in the second quarter and whittled its deficit to three points (24-21) with 5:08 left in the quarter. Berks went on a 13-5 run to close out the quarter and took a 37-26 lead into the halftime intermission. Berks dominated the third quarter to take a 19 point cushion (66-47) into the final frame. Abington scored the first six points of the fourth and trailed by as little as 13 (70-57) with 5:47 to play, but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way.

Kylie Herman recorded a career-high 32 points on 13-of-24 shooting from the floor and went 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The senior guard notched 15 of her points in the first half and followed with a 17 point effort in the second half. In addition, Herman had five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocked shots.

Katie Armstrong also turned in a solid performance, with 20 points 7-of-13 shooting from the field. The junior guard recorded five boards, four assists, three blocks, and three steals. Julia Bookwalter notched fourth double-double of the season after tallying 14 points and 10 boards. She also chipped in three assists and two steals. Lex Schratt added six points and three assists, while Nicole Kopcik had five points, six boards, and two assists.

Sydney Barrow led Abington with 20 points and five assists, while Ashya Gaddy had 16 points, five assists, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Laquana Nagbe added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Berks will host Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC South contest on Saturday, February 1 at 3 p.m.
