WBB edged by Harrisburg on the road

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team suffered a 59-56 setback on the road to Penn State Harrisburg in a Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest.

Berks (8-7, 3-1 NEAC South) led 25-23 after the first quarter and were ahead by one point (37-36) at halftime. The teams exchanged leads out of the break before Harrisburg (6-9, 3-1 NEAC South) built a four point lead around the midway point of the period. Berks closed out the quarter on a 6-2 run to make it 45-all going into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Berks led 50-48, but back-to-back unanswered 3-pointers put Harrisburg on top by four points (54-50) with 5:55 to play. A pair of made free throws gave the home squad its largest lead of the second half (56-50) with 4:31 to play. Katie Armstrong and Julia Bookwalter both had layups to pull within two points (56-54) with 2:43 left. The teams combined to go 0-of-7 from the field and Harrisburg missed both of its free throw attempts over the next two minutes and 29 seconds of action. Harrisburg made a pair of foul shots with 14 seconds left to end the scoring drought and go up by four (58-54). Berks had its 3-point attempt blocked and Harrisburg then went 1-for-2 at the line to go up 59-54. Armstrong banked in a runner in the paint to get Berks within three (59-56), but Harrisburg was able to run off the final two seconds to secure the win.

Armstrong just missed out on recording a triple-double after recording 19 points, 13 rebounds, eight steals, all of which were game-highs. In addition, Armstrong had four assists, which tied with Abbie Carr for the contest-high. Kylie Herman also showed up all over the stat sheet with 16 points, five steals, five boards, two blocks, and an assist. Bookwalter and Nicole Kopcik each chipped in six points, with Kopcik pulling down seven rebounds and Bookwalter recording four boards and two blocks. Carr had four points and seven rebounds to go along with her season-high in assists.

Kendis Butler made four 3-pointers and led Harrisburg with 17 points, while also grabbing five rebounds. Laurel Amey notched 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Anna Mahan and Paige Kubalak each had 10 points, with Mahan recording a team-high 11 boards.

Berks returns to action with a home game against Penn State Abington on Tuesday, January 28 at 8 p.m.
