Lorah, Nittany Lions hot shooting tops Gallaudet

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team put on a clinic from the 3-point line in the Nittany Lions 89-81 victory over visiting Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division showdown on Saturday afternoon.

Jeff Lorah gave Berks a 12-9 lead with a 3-pointer at the 15:19 mark of the first half and the Nittany Lions held that lead the rest of the way. Berks built its largest lead of the opening half at 10 (26-16) with 10:11 left, but the Bison were able to pull within two points (33-31) with 5:35 to go in the period. The Nittany Lions closed out the half on a 6-2 run to lead 39-33 at the break.

Berks jumped out to a 14-point advantage with 12:32 to play in the second half, but Gallaudet was able to pull within in nine points with 9:03 to play. The Nittany Lion held their largest lead at 16 points (78-62) with 3:36 left on the clock. The Bison fought back to make it an 87-81 score with 12 seconds remaining, but a layup by Hassan Darby put the game out of reach with 10 seconds left.

Lorah led the Nittany Lions offensive attack after shooting 9-of-17 from the field of 5-of-10 from 3-point range to finish with a season-high 26 points. The freshman guard made three 3's and had 18 points in the first half. In addition, Lorah had three assists, three steals, and a rebound, while playing all 40 minutes of the game.

Xavian Rodriguez, Brandon Wise, and Jared Houck all connected on three baskets from beyond the arc and all scored in double figures. Rodriguez and Wise both tallied 15 points, followed by Houck with 13. Rodriguez pulled down a game-high nine boards, while Houck had six assists and five rebounds. Matt Martin chipped in eight points and five boards. Steve Luchansky and Darby both finished with six points and combined for five rebounds and four assists.

As a team, the Nittany Lions shot 16-of-27 from long range for a 59.3%. The 16 3-pointers made and the 59.% shooting both rank as the second best performance in a single-game in program history. Berks was also a very efficient 59.3% (33-of-57) from the field, although they did struggle at the foul line where they shot 53.8% (7-for-13).

Gallaudet relied heavily on a three-man scoring attack, led by Preston Kelly with 29 points and Noah Valencia with 23. Steve Valencia-Biskupiak recorded 14 points to go with a team-high six boards and four blocked shots.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn College for an NEAC South contest on Tuesday, January 21 at 5 p.m.
