Nittany Lions hold on in win over LBC

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team held off a late rally to defeat Lancaster Bible College, 63-59, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Wednesday night at Horst Athletic Center.

The Nittany Lions (6-6, 2-2 NEAC) jumped out to a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but LBC outscored Berks by five points in the second to make it a 32-30 lead for the Nittany Lions at half. Berks extended its lead to double-digits in the third to enter the fourth period leading 56-44.

LBC scored the first six points of the final quarter, before Kylie Herman made a jumper with 6:23 left to make it 58-50 in Berks' favor. The Chargers scored the only four points of the game over the next 5:30 of play to cut their deficit to four points (58-54) with 47 seconds left. Katie Armstrong extended the lead to six points with 40 seconds left, but a layup by Alaysha Iwais put it back to four with 24 seconds left. Sam Brensinger went 1-for-2 on her trip to free throw line to push the lead to five points, before Lizzy Tilton hit a 3-pointer to narrow the gap to 61-59 with 9 seconds left. LBC fouled Julia Bookwalter during the ensuing in bound pass and the junior forward made both shots to put give Berks its winning four-point margin.

Armstrong had a game-high and team-best numbers in practically every statistical category. The junior guard had 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals. The assists and steal totals were game-highs, while her points tied Tilton for the contest-high. Armstrong led the Nittany Lions in rebounds, but trailed Jordyn Beers (11 boards) of the Chargers. In addition, Armstrong was tied for the game-high in field goals made (7) and 3-pointers made (3).

Bookwalter also turned in a strong all-around performance after recording 14 points, seven boards, four assists, two blocked shots, and a steal. Nicole Kopcik added 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Herman finished with 12 points, three assists, and a pair of steals. Brensingers chipped in seven points and six boards.

Tilton led the Chargers with 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, and two blocked shots. Iwais added 15 points, followed by Caitlin Hickey with 11.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University in a NEAC South contest on Saturday, January 18 at 3 p.m.
