WBB tops Cazenovia in NEAC battle

READING, PA - Sam Brensinger made three foul shots in the final 30 seconds and the defense denied a game-tying basket as the Penn State Berks women's basketball team earned a thrilling 70-67 victory over Cazenovia College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (5-6, 1-2 NEAC) trailed by three at the end of the first period and were down 35-30 at the halftime intermission. Out of the break, Berks outscored the Wildcats (3-9, 1-2 NEAC) 24-15 in the third quarter to take a four point lead into the fourth.

Cazenovia scored the first four points of the fourth to even the score at 54-all, but back-to-back jumpers by Julia Bookwalter put Berks ahead by four. The Wildcats had a 5-0 run to go ahead 61-60 with 5:04 remaining in regulation. The teams alternated leads over the next few possessions, with the Wildcats going up by three (65-62) with 1:38 left. Nicole Kopcik hit a corner 3-pointer to even the game at 65-65, but Danielle Caivana put Cazenovia back up two with a jumper. On the ensuing possession, Kopcik pulled down a huge offensive rebound and got the putback to even the game at 67. Kopcik finished off her solid run with a defensive rebound off a missed Cazenovia 3-pointer. Brensinger went to the line, where she converted on 1-of-2 shots. Cazenovia went to the line and missed both free throws, but got the offensive rebound on the second miss,but turned the ball over with a traveling violation. Brensinger again went to the line and this time knocked down both free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining on the clock. The Wildcats got off a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the ball hit off the side of the rim to give the Nittany Lions the victory.

Berks had four players score in double figures, led by Kylie Herman with 17 points. Bookwalter followed with 14 points and registered a game-high eight rebounds. Brensinger and Katie Armstrong each recorded 10 points and four boards.

Caivana finished with a game-high 24 points, followed by Amy Holland with 16 and Alexis Tubbs with 11.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC South contest on Wednesday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
