Women's soccer wins 1-0 thriller over F&M

READING, PA - Alexis Schoener broke a scoreless tie with her first goal of the season in the 61st minute and the Penn State Berks defense held strong as the Penn State Berks women's soccer team defeated Franklin & Marshall College, 1-0, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 1-2 in the early going, while the Diplomats fall to 2-1 overall.

The teams played a scoreless first half, with F&M outshooting the Nittany Lions by a 6-1 margin and holding a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Diplomats turned the ball over deep in their defensive third. Schoener collected the loose ball, took a couple of touches and beat the scrambling goalkeeper with a line drive inside the near post to give Berks a 1-0 lead at the 61:07 mark of the match.

Following the goal, Leslie Estrada made four saves and Megan Jardine recorded a defensive save over the final 39 minutes of action. The defensive back line of Karina Raykova, Emily Stump, Lydia Cacciola, and Kristi Cox turned in solid performances as the four played all 90 minutes of the game.

Estrada finished the match with 10 saves, one shy of her season-high that she recorded on Tuesday night at Dickinson College. Her counterpart, Sara Ghorashi recorded two saves on the day.

Overall, F&M outshot Berks by a 13-5 margin and had a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host No. 7 ranked Messiah College on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 p.m.
