Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer falls to No.3 Messiah College

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team kept it close after 45 minutes of action, but No. 3 ranked Messiah College pulled away in the second half en route to a 6-1 victory over the Nittany Lions in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

The teams sat through a lengthy delay during warm-ups due to passing thunder storms before getting into action. The Falcons (4-1) got on the board with two first half goals for a 2-0 advantage at the intermission. Out of the break, Messiah tacked on four goals over the next 20 minutes of action to put the game away.

The Nittany Lions kept fighting and a nice run by Vanessa Olivares led to a Berks throw-in in the final minutes. The ensuing throw-in was knocked around a bit before Karina Raykova collected the loose ball and delivered a line drive over the keeper's head and into the far back corner for a goal at the 86:59 mark of the match. The goal was Raykova's first of the season.

Earlier in the second half, Alexis Schoener had a couple of nice shots put on frame, but Lydia Ewing was able to make the save on both shots. Leslie Estrada finished the contest with nine saves in goal for the Nittany Lions.

Messiah outshot the Nittany Lions by a 21-3 (15-3 on goal) margin and held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions open up NEAC play with a trip to Gallaudet University on Saturday, September 14 at 3 p.m.
