Early PK dooms Nittany Lions in setback to Dickinson

CARLISLE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team battled hard for all 90 minutes, but Dickinson College was able to come away with a 1-0 victory in Tuesday evening's non-conference contest at Miller Memorial Field.

The lone score of the match came at the 14:59 mark in the first half on a converted penalty kick by Rachel Lazris.

The Nittany Lions (0-2) defense held strong the rest of the way and did not allow another goal. Leslie Estrada played a significant roll in that after finishing with 11 saves in just the second contest of her collegiate career. The freshman keeper registered six saves in the first half and stopped five more in the second period.

In addition to Estrada, the strong play from the defensive back line of Karina Raykova, Emily Stump, Lydia Cacciola, Kristi Cox, and Liz Eisele helped keep Berks within striking distance. As did the defensive help from midfielders Megan Jardine and Charlotte Pizzuto.

Offensively, Berks recorded six shots - two on goal - but generated several other scoring opportunities that did not show up in the boxscore. Jardine drove a couple of free kicks in front of the goal, but Berks either did not get a head or foot on it or the Red Devils (2-0) keeper knocked the ball away. Alexis Schoener crossed a ball in front of the net late in the second half, but no one was there to connect for the Nittany Lions.

Jardine had a shot on goal stopped by Carli Boyer in the 54th minute and a few minutes later Sara Hathaway had a ball saved by Boyer. Jeyda Duran and Jess Viola both recorded a pair of shots in the contest.

The Red Devils outshot Berks by a 22-6 margin (12-2 on goal) and held a 12-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host their home opener against Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday, September 7 at 4 p.m.
