Clapper nets hat trick in shutout over Penn College

READING, PA - Emily Clapper recorded her second straight hat trick and the team notched his second shutout in as many contests as the Penn State Berks women's soccer team defeated Penn College, 5-0, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions improve to 4-5 overall and 3-0 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats fall to 2-4-1 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

JoJo Zolli got Berks on the board with a goal at the 12:49 mark of the opening period with the help of a nice cross from the end line by Alexis Schoener. Less than 30 seconds later, Zolli provided the assist on Clapper's first score of the night to give the Nittany Lions an early 2-0 advantage.

The score remained that way going into the break, but Berks again came out the gates strong. At the 46:23 mark, Clapper made a pass through traffic to Jeyda Duran, who then chipped a shot over the keeper's head and just under the crossbar for her second goal of the season. In the 70th minute, Charlotte Pizzuto played a ball up ahead that Clapper collected and beat the keeper with a liner inside the near post. Clapper finished off her scoring binge after an impressive heel pass from Sara Hathaway set her up with an open look in the 77th minute.

Leslie Estrada registered her fourth shutout of the season after turning away all three shots on target. The freshman keeper made a nice jumping save to knock the ball over the crossbar at the 79:36 mark. Estrada received strong support from the defensive unit of Karina Raykova, Megan Jardine, Emily Stump, Lydia Cacciola, and Kristi Cox.

Taylor Gonzales finished the contest with 13 saves in net for the Wildcats. For the game, the Nittany Lions outshot Penn College by a 38-8 margin (18-3 on goal) and held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC contest on Saturday, September 28 at 11:30 a.m.
