Volleyball downs Penn College in NEAC opener

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team overcame a slow start to top Penn College, 3-1, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Thursday night at Bardo Gymnasium.

The Nittany Lions improve to 6-5 on the season and 1-0 in the NEAC, while Penn College falls to 1-10 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Berks dropped the first set 25-19, but bounced back with a convincing 25-4 victory in the second game. From there, the Nittany Lions closed out the match by scores of 25-20 and 25-12.

Berks, who trailed 2-0 in the second set before rattling off 13 straight points and later led 22-3, finished the set with five kills and nine aces. Jenna Plitnick recorded four aces, Natalie Dwyer had three, and Zoe Barna had one in the set. For the game, those three players combined for the entire teams 18 aces. Plitnick matched a career-high with eight aces, which is also tied for the sixth most in a single-game in program history. Dwyer and Barna each finished with five aces, which ties a career-high for Dwyer and is a new personal-best for Barna.

Blair Eckel finished with a team-high eight kills, followed by Barna and Syd Himmelberger with seven apiece. Dwyer and Maddie Deloglos both chipped in five kills. Five different players recorded 10 or more digs, led by Julia Rathsam with 15 and Barna with 10. Plitnick notched 11 digs, while Eckel and Dwyer both had 10. Barna and Deloglos each registered three block assists at the net. Rathsam dished out 30 assists to go along with her three kills.

The Nittany Lions will compete in a tri-match at Penn State Abington on Saturday, September 21. They open up with a NEAC contest against host Abington at 12 p.m. and will face Notre Dame of Maryland University in a non-conference tilt at 2 p.m.
