Valverde powers Nittany Lions to 3-1 win over Arcadia

READING, PA - Brenden Valverde netted a pair of goals and put pressure on the defense all day to lead the Penn State Berks men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-1 victory over Arcadia University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 2-3-1 overall, while Arcadia drops to 4-3 on the season. This was the first time that Berks has defeated the Knights men's soccer team in three tries.

Arcadia got on the scoreboard first when Zac Runkle found the back of the net off a through ball by Brandon Pryer at the 12:45 mark of the game.

In the 27th minute, Luke Romanoski got taken down by a Knight's defender that the ref deemed just outside of the box. With the free kick, Valverde curled a shot from the right side of the box just inside the top corner of the near post to even the score at 1-all.

Out of the halftime intermission, Valverde played a ball over the defense to set up Nate Nguyen for a goal in the 52nd minute. The score was Nguyen's third of the season and Valverde's team-leading third assist of the year.

Berks put the contest out of reach at the 88:07 mark when Johnny Guimaraes played a through by to Valverde, who deposited a line drive inside the right post for his seventh goal of the season.

Carter Lam made four saves in goal in the first half, while Jose Aparicio had two stops in the second half to earn the win in net. The defensive unit of Jakob Fischer, Brennan Scheetz, Ash Deery, and Andrew Bowman played solid all game. Scheetz made a defensive save in the 56th minute to preserve the Nittany Lions 2-1 lead at the time.

The Nittany Lions outshot Arcadia by a 15-14 margin (9-8 on goal), while both teams managed just one corner kick apiece.

Berks will travel to Penn State Abington for a NEAC contest on Saturday, September 21 at 1 p.m.
