Women's soccer blanks Gallaudet to open conference play

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team opened up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on the right note, defeating Gallaudet University, 8-0, on Saturday afternoon at Hotchkiss Field.

The Nittany Lions improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the NEAC,while the Bison fall to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

Sara Hathaway tallied a pair of goals in the first eight minutes to help Berks jump out to an early lead. The freshman forward recorded the first goal of her collegiate career 3:44 into the contest on a fastbreak that was setup up on a great pass over the defense by Emily Clapper. Hathaway found the back of the net again at 8:21 after taking a pass from Charlotte Pizzuto and sending a shot past the keeper inside the right post. Pizzuto drove a shot over the keeper's head from 30-yards out in the 12th minute, which was set up by quick ball movement from Hathaway and Liz Eisele.  The final score of the first half came off a deep ball by Pizzuto that was misplayed by the Bison defense and led to a breakaway for Alexis Schoener, who beat the keeper with a lofted shot from 20-yards out.

Schoener opened up the scoring in the second half with a shot over the keeper's head in the 49th minute with Hathaway providing the assist. Hathaway netted her first hat-trick after scoring off of a pass from JoJo Zolli in the 53rd minute. Schoener notched her first hat-trick of the season with a score at 57:51 off a pass from Karina Raykova. Jess Viola capped off the scoring with her first goal of the year, DeAnna Weir added the assist.

Leslie Estrada, who picked up her second shutout win of the season, was untested on net after the Nittany Lions offense maintained the bulk of the possession.

The Nittany Lions will travel to No. 24 ranked Swarthmore College for a non-conference contest on Sunday, September 15 at 4 p.m.
