Men's soccer tops Gallaudet in NEAC opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team rallied from an early two score deficit en route to picking up a 6-2 victory on the road over Gallaudet University in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions now sit at 1-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the NEAC, while the Bison drop to 0-4-1 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

Chad Johnson got GU on the board with an unassisted goal at the 4:46 mark and he later had a successful penalty kick attempt in the 16th minute to give the Bison an early 2-0 advantage.

Berks answered back with a pair of goals from Ayden Lee in the span of less than 10 minutes apart. The freshman midfielder tallied his first goal of the match with a shot into the far left corner off a feed from Alex Khaldaoui at the 20:35 mark. At the 29:52 mark, Brenden Valverde fired in a throw-in from the left sideline that Lee headed past the keeper to knot the contest at 2-all.

After checking into the contest at the 40:16 mark for his collegiate debut, Ovi Orellana scored what would prove to be the game-winner at 40:28. The goal was again assisted on a long throw-in from Valverde, this time from the right sideline, and Orellana headed inside the near post for the first goal of his career.

The Nittany Lions took the one-goal lead into the halftime break and quickly added to it in the second period. Lee netted his first hat trick with the Nittany Lions with a score in the 50th minute with a grounder inside the left post off a nice pass from Tyler Dell.

Berks extended its lead when Nate Nguyen found the back of the net in the 83rd minute with Johnny Guimaraes assisting on the play. Valverde finished off the scoring when he tallied his team-best fifth goal of the season with Nguyen providing the assist in the 84th minute.

Carter Lam earned his first win in net after finishing with four saves in the first half. Jose Aparicio made three stops on the three shots he saw throughout the second half to help preserve the win. In addition, Andrew Bowman made a defensive save early in the first half that kept the deficit at 1-0 at the time.

Berks outshot the Bison by a 19-16 margin (12-10 on goal) and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Arcadia University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, September 18 at 4:30 p.m.
