Women's volleyball wins five-set thriller over Altoona

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team topped Penn State Altoona in a 3-2 thriller on Friday evening at the Beaver Community Center.

Berks (5-4) led through the bulk of the opening game, but Altoona (3-3) made a late push to pick up a 25-23 win. Berks won the second the second game 25-17 and outlasted Altoona by a score of 26-24 in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Visiting Altoona had a strong fourth set, winning 25-16 to even the score at 4-all. In the decisive fifth set, Berks jumped out to a 3-0 lead and were ahead 5-3, before Altoona reeled off four straight points to go up 7-5. Berks went on a 7-1 run and eventually won a score of 15-10 in the final game.

Natalie Dwyer and Blair Eckel combined for 35 kills, which was more than half of the teams total. Dwyer had career-best and game-high 19 kills, while Eckel also notched a personal-best 16 kills. Syd Himmelberger chipped in a career-high nine kills, followed by Maddie Deloglos with seven kills and Sarah Nichols with six. Julia Rathsam handed out a career-high 52 assists, which is the single-match school record.

As a team, Berks collected a single-game program record 63 kills, surpassing the previous high of 60 kills set against Albright College on October 6, 2014.

Berks had five players record 10 or more digs in the contest. Rathsam had team-high 19 digs, followed by Eckel with 17 and Madison Hetrick with 15. Marie Durkota picked up 11 digs, while Jenna Plitnick had 10. Himmelberger also notched a personal-best four block assists.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Neumann University for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, September 17 at 7 p.m.
