Men's soccer edged by Albright in home opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 heartbreaking setback to Albright College in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (0-2) generated a lot of scoring opportunities, but Albright keeper Billy Mullen turned in a solid performance to keep Berks off the scoreboard most of the contest.

Both teams came out shooting from the stop, with Brenden Valverde putting a shot on goal just 1:32 into the match. Billy Hanratty rattled off a shot for the Lions (1-1) that went wide at the 1:57 mark and then he had a shot stopped by Carter Lam at 2:29.

The teams traded shots and corners throughout the rest of the half, but neither was able to find the back of the net. The Nittany Lions outshot Albright 9-3 in the opening half, including a 5-2 count in shots on goal. Berks recorded four saves and the Lions had two.

Out of the intermission, Berks turned the ball over deep in its own zone, which gave way to a breakaway for Eric Adamo, who deposited a shot inside the far post to give Albright a 1-0 lead just 1:05 into the second half.

Trailing 1-0, Berks saw Mullen record a pair of diving saves less than six seconds apart to keep them off the board in the 74th minute.

In the 79th minute, the Nittany Lions ahead failed to clear the ball and Albright came away with a fast break. This time it was Yaniv Gonyoe who took a couple of touches and delivered a goal to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Valverde took a dribbled into the box and was dragged down from behind to earn a penalty kick. The junior forwarded converted the PK for his first goal of the season and to make it a 2-1 game with 8:54 left in regulation.

Berks tried to find the equalizer down the stretch, but Nate Nguyen had a shot saved by Mullen, while Valverde and Ayden Lee both had shots sail high of the goal.

Mullen finished the contest with 15 saves, while Lam had four stops for the Nittany Lions. Berks outshot the Lions by a 23-8 margin for the game and held an 11-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, September 4 at 4 p.m.
