Women's volleyball tops Smith College in season opener

DANBURY, CONN. - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team topped Smith College, 3-1, on the first day of the Western Connecticut Invitational on Friday evening. This marked the first time the Nittany Lions won the season opener since a 3-0 victory over Immaculata University on September 1, 2011.

The Nittany Lions (1-0) had a convincing 25-11 win the opening set and followed with a 25-18 triumph, before falling 25-21 in the third. Berks clinched the victory with a  25-16 win in the fourth set.

Freshman Zoe Barna made a strong debut with a contest-high 12 kills, while also adding five digs, two blocks, and two assists. Natalie Dwyer chipped in 10 kills and 19 digs, both of which were the second most for Berks. Madison Wojciechowski had a game-high 25 digs to go along with three assist and two aces. Julia Rathsam recorded 35 assists, 10 digs, and an ace. Abbie Carr notched seven kills, followed by Syd Himmelberger and Sarah Nichols with six each.

The Nittany Lions will take on host Western Connecticut State tomorrow at 10 a.m., followed by a tilt with Emmanuel College at 12 p.m.
