Women's volleyball splits final day of Colonial Classic

DANBURY, CONN. - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Colonial Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions suffered a 3-0 setback to host Western Connecticut State University to open the day, but bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Emmanuel College later in the day.

In the opening match, the Colonials (2-0) downed Berks by game scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-17. Zoe Barna led the Nittany Lions offensive attack with seven kills, followed by Natalie Dwyer with six. Blair Eckel and Maddie Deloglos each chipped in four kills, while Syd Himmelberger add three. Julia Rathsam handed out 21 assists and eight digs, while notching one service ace. Madison Wojciechowski recorded a team-high 14 digs to go along with two assists and an ace.

In the win over the Saints (0-2), Berks won by scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-14. Barna again led the offense with seven kills, while Abbie Carr and Deloglos both had six. Rathsam dished out 22 assists and was one of three players that recorded 10 or more digs. Wojciechowski had a team-best 13 digs, while Eckel had 12 and Rathsam added 10. Rathsam, Wojciechowski, Dwyer, and Deloglos all had two service aces. Carr registered a game-high three solo blocks.

The Nittany Lions return to action next weekend at the Profs Invitational hosted by Rowan University. Berks will open the invite on Friday, September 6 against Widener University (6 p.m.) and Misericordia University (8 p.m.).
