Women's soccer edged by Wilkes in season opener

EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to Wilkes University in the 2019 season opener on Friday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

The Nittany Lions (0-1) found themselves in an early 1-0 deficit when the hosts scored off of a corner kick after just 8:30 had ticked away on the clock.

Possession stayed in the Colonels favor over the next 20 minutes, but Berks was able to put together some offense to close out the first half. Alexis Schoener put a shot on goal in the 38th minute and then had a shot sail wide of target in the 39th minute. The Nittany Lions also recorded a three corner kicks in the span of four minutes. Lauren Korpics had a shot on goal stopped and Schoener tacked on two more shots, but Berks was still on the wrong end of a 1-0 score.

Berks continued its strong offensive effort to begin the second half with three corner kicks and three shots over the first 20-plus minutes, while Wilkes had no offensive stats in that time. Korpics put a shot on goal that was blocked, but the freshman recovered the rebound and deposited the ball in the back of the goal for the first goal of her young career to knot that game at 1-all.

Neither team was able to generate much offense until the Colonels broke through with a score in the 78th minute to go up 2-1. The lack of offense continued for both sides in the final 12 minutes as the only stat tallied was a corner kick by Wilkes with less than 30 seconds remaining in the contest.

Leslie Estrada finished with one save in goal in her collegiate debut for the Nittany Lions, while her counterpart Samantha Cecere recorded a pair of stops.

Berks held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal and 8-6 on corner kicks for the match.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference contest at Dickinson College on Tuesday, September 3 at 7 p.m.
