Men's soccer downed by Wilkes, 4-1

EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 4-1 setback on the road to Wilkes University in the 2019 season opener at Schmidt Stadium on Friday evening.

The Nittany Lions (0-1) fell into a 2-0 deficit in the first half and were down 3-0 after Wilkes scored just 1:21 into the second half.

Freshman Nate Nguyen put Berks on the board when he scored on a breakaway in the 67th minute to make it a 3-1 contest. The Colonels put the game out of reach with a goal in the 83rd minute.

Forward Brenden Valverde managed five shots - four on goal - but was unable to find the back of the net. Nguyen fired off four shots, while three teammates tallied one shot.

Jose Aparicio and Carter Lam split time in goal, with Lam recording one save.

The Nittany Lions will host their home opener against Albright College on Sunday, September 1 at 1 p.m.
