Baseball tops Gallaudet in series opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team topped Gallaudet University, 26-2, in the first game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) series on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improved to 20-13 overall and 11-5 in the NEAC, while the Bison dropped to 9-28 on the season and 2-14 in the conference.

The Bison got on the board with a run in the top of the first, but Berk responded with one in the second and took a comfortable lead with eight in the third and three in the fourth. The Nittany Lions then combined for 14 runs over the final three innings, while Gallaudet pushed across another run in the eighth.

Tyler Kreitz finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and four runs scored. Dalton Hughes was 3-for-4 with three doubles, five RBI, and four runs scored, while Mason Pennypacker went 3-for-6 with two doubles, five RBI, and two runs scored. Toby Welk, Noah Kurtz, and Dante Salerno all had two hits. Eric Gale, Nick Esz, and Kurtz each recorded a double and the team combined for 10 on the day.

Alex Laudenslager improved to 5-1 on the season after striking out six batter in 5.0 innings of work. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits and one unearned run. Justin Butler struck out one batter in two scoreless inning of relief, while Ben Wanner had a strike out and one run allowed in 2.0 innings of work.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4 at 12 p.m.
