Baseball closes out regular season wtih sweep of Gallaudet

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a sweep of Gallaudet University in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions took the opener 13-2 and followed with a 16-4 victory in the nightcap.

The Nittany Lions improved to 22-13 overall and 13-5 in the NEAC, while Gallaudet drops to 9-30 on the year and 2-16 in the conference.

The Bison jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener, but Berks evened things in the bottom half of the first and tacked on three more in the third. The Nittany Lions combined for eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings to put the game out of reach.

Dante Salerno finished just 1-for-2, but drove in career-high five RBI. The junior center fielder had a sacrifice fly in his first two plate appearances and cleared the bases with a 3-run triple in the fourth.

Dalton Hughes was 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored, while Austin Madeja was 2-for-3 with one RBI and had a career-high four runs scored. Toby Welk, who was intentionally walked three times, was 0-for-0 with two RBI and two runs scored. Eric Gale had a hit and drove in two runs, while Nick Esz recorded one hit and scored twice.

Hunter Sentz scattered five hits and allowed two unearned runs, while matching a career-high in strikeouts with six. Braden Glad struck out one batter and two innings of hitless relief.

In the second game, the Bison again grabbed an early lead with three runs in the top of the first. Berks got one run in both the first and second, but Gallaudet extended its lead to 4-2 with a run in the top of the third. The Nittany Lions tied it at 4-all in the third and then put up an 8-spot in the fourth to lead 12-4. They tacked on three more in the fifth and another one in the sixth to go up 16-4.

Madeja went 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the offense. Tyler Kreitz was 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI, and two runs cored, while Welk finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. TATE YERGEY was 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI, and a scored and Hughes went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Mason Pennypacker recorded one hit, two RBI, and scored three times.

Drew Skrocki allowed six hits and four runs, while striking out five batters in 6.0 innings to earn the win. Dale Murphy notched his first save after 3.0 innings on one-hit, scoreless relief.

The Nittany Lions will wait for the rest of the NEAC to finish its league slate before finding out what seed they will be and who they will host for the play-in game on Tuesday, May 7.
