Baseball picks up sweep of Cazenovia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team got strong pitching and powerful hitting in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) sweep of Cazenovia College on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won the opener 4-0 and the then offense exploded in an 18-2 game two victory.

The Nittany Lions improve to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats drop to 3-9 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.

Jamie Glass turned in a magnificent performance on the mound in the opener. The sophomore right-hander tossed the first complete-game, shutout of his career. He scattered just four hits, while striking out a career-high nine batters. Glass improved to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.74.

Toby Welk provide the offensive power to help out Glass. The senior shortstop drilled a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the first inning. In the bottom of the third, Dalton Hughes singled and Welk laced a line drive homer over the fence in left field to make it 3-0 in the early going.

Berks capped off its scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth when Austin Madeja reached on an error and Eric Gale scored from third.

Welk finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk. Hughes, Mason Pennypacker, Gale, Tyler Kreitz, and Justin Welch all recorded a hit in the winning effort.

In the second game, Berks scored three or more runs in five of its eight at bats. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings, which was more than enough support the way Alex Laudenslager was pitching. The sophomore right-hander scattered four hits and allowed two runs (one earned), while striking out three batters in 8.0 innings of work. Justin Butler worked out of a bases loaded, no out jam for a scoreless ninth inning.

Noah Kurtz enjoyed a career-day at the plate, going 5-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Hughes was 2-for-3 with four RBI, four runs scored, and two walks, while Joe Gramignano went 2-for-4 with four runs scored, three walks, and a stolen base. Welk finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double, while Dante Salerno was 1-for-1 with three RBI and a run scored. Salerno and Pennypacker both had two sacrifice flies in the game.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up their three-game series with Cazenovia with a single-game on Sunday, April 7 at 12 p.m.
