Baseball swept by Abington in a pair of close games

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a pair of close losses on the road to Penn State Abington in Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader. Berks dropped the opener, 3-1, and then had its rally come up short in a 4-2 setback in the second game of the twinbill.

Berks falls to 19-13 on the season and 10-5 in the NEAC, while Abington now sits at 19-14 overall and 12-2 in the conference.

In the opener, both teams scratched out a run in the second inning. Abington broke the tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and were able to hold off the Berks bats over the next three innings.

Eric Gale went 2-for-4, while five others recorded one hit each. Justin Welch had the lone RBI for Berks with a fielder's choice in the top of the second.

Hunter Sentz surrendered four hits and three runs, while striking out four batters in 6.0 innings of work.

In game two, Abington got a pair of runs in the third inning and then had a single run in the fifth and seventh to build a 4-0 advantage. In the top of the ninth, Berks plated two runs and had the bases loaded with one out. Abington was able to escape the jam with a game-ending double play.

Dante Salerno was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Tyler Kreitz went 2-for-3. Mason Pennypacker had a double and scored a run, while Gale had a hit and drove in a run.

Drew Skrocki gave up seven hits and three runs, while striking out four batters in 5.2 innings of work. Corey Hennessey allowed two hits and one run, while striking otu two in 2.1  innings of relief.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series at home against Gallaudet University next weekend. The teams will play a single-game on Friday, May 3, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4.
