Baseball drops tight one to Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped a 9-8 thriller to Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Despite playing in Reading, Berks was the designated away team for the game.

Berks falls to 19-11 on the season and 10-3 in the NEAC, while Abington improves to 17-14 overall and 10-2 in the conference.

Abington got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the first, but Berks countered with three runs in the top of the third. Abington got back one run in the bottom of the third, but Berks responded with four in the top of the fourth to go up 7-2. Abington combined for six runs in the sixth through eighth to take an 8-7 lead. Berks evened the game at 8-all in top of the ninth, but a walk with the bases loaded force in a run and led Abington to a walkoff win in the bottom of the ninth.

Dalton Hughes was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Dante Salerno went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a runs scored. Tate Yergey added two hits and drove in two, while Nick Esz had a pair of hits, scored once, and had an RBI.

Alex Laudenslager struck out five batters in 6.0 innings of action. Justin Butler and Drew Skrocki both came on in relief.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow for a doubleheader at Abington beginning at 12 p.m.
