Baseball falls to Immaculata on the road

IMMACULATA, PA - The Penn State Berks and Immaculata baseball team faced each other for the second day in a row, with the Mighty Macs again coming out on top in a tightly contest game. Immaculata, who was the host on Wednesday afternoon, combined for nine runs in the seventh and eighth inning en route to a 13-8 victory.

The Nittany Lions drop to 19-10 on the season, while the Mighty Macs improve to 20-11 overall.

The game started out as a pitcher's duel with neither offense able to crack the scoreboard over the first three innings. In the bottom of fourth, Immaculata broke the scoreless tie with three runs.

The Nittany Lions countered with five runs with two outs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Dante Salerno singled to center to bring in Joe Gramignano, who singled earlier in the inning. Mason Pennypacker drove in Dalton Hughes and Salerno with a double down the right field line. Tate Yergey added another double down the right field line to plate Pennypacker. Tyler Kreitz followed with a single up the middle to score Yergey from second.

Immaculata got one run back in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Nittany Lions tacked on two more runs in the sixth to go up 7-4. Gramignano led off with a double and moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hughes, who reached on the play due to an error. The Mighty Macs were able to catch Hughes trying to steal second, but Gramignano scored on the play for the first run of hte inning. TOBY WELK delivered a double and came around to score on a single up the middle by Pennypacker.

The Mighty Macs scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead at 10-7, but Berks scratched out a run in the eighth to trail by just two runs. Pennypacker continued his fine day with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a single by Yergey. Kreitz sent a fly to left field that was deep enough to allow Pennypacker to tag up and score from third.

Immaculata put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.

Pennypacker finished the game 3-for-4 with one double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Gramignano went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Yergey went 2-for-5 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Welk, Salerno, Kreitz, and Tyler McGarvey all recorded hits in the contest.

Noah Kurtz, who made his first start on the mound, allowed four hits and three runs, while striking out two batters in 3.2 innings of work. Justin Butler had one strikeout in 2.1 innings of relief. Corey Hennessey notched a pair of strikeouts the final 2.0 innings of relief.

Berks returns to action with a big three-game series at Penn State Abington this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 27, followed by a single-game on Sunday, April 28.
