Late rally comes up short; baseball falls to Immaculata

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team scored three in the bottom of the ninth and had the go ahead run at the plate, but Immaculata University was able to defeat the Nittany Lions, 7-4, in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions had their season-high 10-game win streak snapped as they fall to 19-9 overall, while the Mighty Macs improve to 19-11 on the season.

Immaculata took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but evened it up at 1-all in the bottom of the third when Toby Welk doubled and scored on a single through the right side of the infield by Dante Salerno.

The Mighty Macs then put up a single run in each of the next three innings to extend their cushion to 4-1. The visitors tacked on two more in the eight and one in the ninth to build a 7-1 cushion.

In the bottom of the ninth, Mason Pennypacker led off with single to right field and Trevor Delcampe walked to start things off. Tyler McGarvey brought in both runners with a triple to right center to cut the Nittany Lions deficit to 7-3. Berks pulled within three runs (7-4) after McGarvey scored and Nick Esz reached first when his grounder to short was mishandled. Dalton Hughes drew a walk and Welk was intentionally walked to load up the bases with two outs. Pat Maloney drove a ball to the outfield that stayed up long enough for the center fielder to get to for the final out.

Ben Wanner got the start on the mound and went a career-best 5.2 innings. He scattered eight hits and allowed four runs (three earned). Braden Glad surrendered one hit and struck out one batter in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Dale Murphy threw the final two innings, allowing three runs and striking out three batters.

Defensively, the Nittany Lions made several strong plays to keep the Mighty Macs from adding to their lead.

In the top of the first, Immaculata had a single to left and the runner on second tried to score, but Hughes hit cutoff man Tyler Kreitz, who then gunned down the runner at the plate for the final out of the inning. With two on and one out in the fourth, Kreitz fielded a chopper and tug third base, then threw across the diamond to first for an inning ending double play. Esz caught two runner's trying to steal second base. The second runner was attempted to get in a run down, but Esz held onto the ball. After the runner wandered too far, Esz fired to second base to nail the runner and put an end to the seventh inning.

Pennypacker finished 2-for-4 with a runs scored, while McGarvey was 1-for-1 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored. Welk, Salerno, TATE YERGEY, and Kreitz all recorded a hit in the game.

The Nittany Lions and Mighty Macs will play again tomorrow (Wednesday, April 24) at Immaculata at 3:30 p.m.
