Baseball fueled by big innings in sweep of LBC

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team continued to score in bunches as they earned a sweep over Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions won the opener by a score of 14-6, followed by a 14-8 victory in the second game.

The Nittany Lions (19-8, 10-2 NEAC) have extended their winning streak to 10 straight after finishing off the series sweep over the Chargers (8-15, 4-8 NEAC).

Berks, despite playing on its home field, were the visitors for both games of the doubleheader. In the first game, the Nittany Lions opened up the top of the first inning with a four-spot. They later tacked on two more runs in the third and scored six in the fourth to build a 12-0 lead. Both team scored a run to make it 13-1 before the Chargers rallied for five runs in the sixth to pull within seven runs. The Nittany Lions manufactured a run in the top of the seventh to give the final margin of 14-6.

Tate Yergey finished the game 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and three runs scored. Joe Gramignano went 2-for-3 with three RBI, and two runs scored, while Mason Pennypacker (2-for-5), Tyler Kreitz (2-for-4), Noah Kurtz (1-for-4), and ERIC GALE (1-for-2) all scored two times. Toby Welk added two his and had an RBI, while Dalton Hughes recorded one hit, two RBI, and a run scored.

Hunter Sentz picked up the win on the mound to improve to 5-0 on the season. The freshman right-hander scattered 10 hits and allowed four runs (three earned), while striking out one batter in 5.0 innings. Dale Murphy and Brandon Chun each threw an inning of relief.

In the second game, Berks scored in the top of the third before the Chargers plated a run in their next two at-bats to go up 2-1.

The Nittany Lions sprang to life in the with nine runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kreitz singled to left, Nick Esz followed with a bunt single, and Hughes drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Welk delivered a grand slam over the fence in right center for his 11 homer of the season. Dante Salerno followed that with a triple to center field and scored on a single up the middle by Pennypacker. Gale drove a double to center to bring in Pennypacker and Gramignano capped things off by driving in two with a single to left center.

Salerno came around to score from second on an error during Pennypacker's sacrifice bunt in the sixth. JUSTIN WELCH added a bunt single and Yergey scored Pennypacker with a ground out to short to put Berks ahead 12-2.

Jacob Schenck smacked a grand slam to left center in teh bottom of the sixth and Collin Myers later drove in two runs with a double to make it 12-8.

Pennypacker finished off the scoring with a double to deep center field to bring in Welk and Hughes in the seventh.

Welk finished 1-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored. Pennypacker went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Gramignano added two hits and two RBI. Hughes, Salerno, Kreitz, and Esz all had two hits and scored two runs.

Drew Skrocki picked up the win on the mound to improve to 4-2 ont he year. Justin Butler 3.2 innings of two-hit, scoreless relief to earn his first save of the season and second of his career.

The Nittany Lions will host Immaculata University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 23 at 4 p.m.
