Baseball cruises to win over Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team defeated Lancaster Bible College, 21-1, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday afternoon at Charger Field.

The Nittany Lions extended their win streak to eight streak to improve to 17-8 overall and 8-2 in the NEAC, while the Chargers drop to 8-13 on the season and 4-6 in the conference.

Berks scored a pair of runs in the top of the second and added four more in the third inning. After LBC got a run in the bottom of the third, the Nittany Lions pulled away with nine runs in the fourth to go up 15-1.

That was more than enough run support for starting pitcher Alex Laudenslager. The sophomore right-hander scattered five hits and allowed one run, while striking out three batters in the complete-game effort. Laudenslager has thrown 7.0 or more innings and allowed three or less runs in each of his last four appearances. In addition, he has earned the win on the mound in all four of those appearances.

Toby Welk and Eric Gale combined to go 7-for-10 with two doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, and eight runs scored. Welk, who recorded the sixth multi-home run game of his career, went 3-for-5 with one double, two homers, five RBI, and four runs scored. Gale was 4-for-5 with one double, one homer, four RBI, four runs scored, and one stolen base. Welk now has 10 homers this season, while Gale homered for the second consecutive game and has three this spring.

Joe Gramignano and Tate Yergey both recorded one hit and drove in three runs and scored once. Mason Pennypacker, who walked three times, scored three times, while Tyler Kreitz and Dalton Hughes each drove in a run and scored twice.

The Nittany Lions and Chargers will play the doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 on the campus of Penn State Berks. Lancaster Bible will remain the home team in both games.
