Baseball outlasts Penn College in slugfest

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team outlasted Penn College, 18-12, in a slugest on Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Hintz Athletic Field.

With the win, the Nittany Lions finished off the three-game sweep of Penn College and improved to 16-8 overall and 7-2 in the NEAC. The Wildcats drop to 6-17 on the season and 4-5 in the conference. Berks pounded out a season-high 24 hits, including three doubles and four home runs. The team also drew three walks and were hit by pitch six times.

Penn College jumped out to an early lead after scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Berks got two runs back in the bottom half with back-to-back solo home runs by Toby Welk and Dante Salerno. The homer was the eighth of the season and 29th of his career, while Salerno recorded his first home run of his the season and of his collegiate career.

The Wildcats pushed their lead back up to five runs after scoring twice in the top of the third to go up 7-2. The Nittany Lions scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-7 lead. Salerno led off with a double down the left field line and Mason Pennypacker followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Tate Yergey delivered an RBI single through the left side of the infield for the first run of the inning. Tyler Kreitz singled through the right side to load up the bases and Justin Welch followed with an RBI single to left. Joe Gramignano drove in a run with a single through the left side of the infield to make it a 7-5 deficit. Dalton Hughes delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a three-run blast over the fence in right center, which was his first home run of the season.

Berks tacked on two runs in the fifth to take a 10-7 lead. Pennypacker moved up to third on a bunt single by Yergey and score when the throw got away from the first baseman. Kreitz later added a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Gale from third base.

Richard Lennon smacked a two-run homer and Samuel Zeigler drove in two runs with a double to left center to put Penn College back in front, 11-10 in the top of the sixth. That lead was short lived, however, as Berks plated seven runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Salerno was hit by a pitch and Pennypacker singled up the middle before Gale smashed a three-run homer to left field to give the Nittany Lions a 13-12 lead. Later in the inning, Welch had an RBI single followed by an RBI double from Gramignano.  Hughes lifted a single down the left field line to drive in two runs and cap of fhe scoring for the inning.

Penn College got one run back in the top of hte seventh, but the Nittany Lions eventually restored their six run lead with one in the bottom of the eighth. Salerno drove Hughes from second base with the final run of the game.

Drew Skrocki set the Wildcats down in order in the ninth to secure his second win in as many days. The three up, three down in the bottom of the ninth was the first time Penn College went down in order all day. Skrocki allowed three hits and one runs, while striking out one batter in the final 3.1 innings of the game. Noah Kurtz pitched a season-high 3.1 innings, surrendering four hits and four runs with two strikeouts. Jamie Glass, who started the game, struck out three batters, while lasting 2.1 innings

Every batter in the Berks lineup had a hit and eight of the nine batters recorded two or more hits. Gramignano and Yergey each finished 4-for-5 to lead the offense. Gramignano added one double, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Yergey drove in one run and score twice. Hughes, Salerno, and Pennypacker all tallied three hits, with Hughes driving in a career-high five RBI. Salerno and Pennypacker each score three times. Welk and Welch both went 2-for-4, while Gale was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a three-game series at Lancaster Bible College next weekend. The teams will play a single-game on Friday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 beginning at 12 p.m.
