Nittany Lions rally in game two pick up sweep of Penn College

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team rode a strong pitching performance from Alex Laudenslager in the game one victory and then came back from an 8-1 deficit and held on late for a wild win in game two to earn a sweep of Penn College. The Nittany Lions took the opener 8-3 and followed it up with a 13-12 win in game two of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader at Hintz Athletic Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions hosted their Pink Game fundraiser with all proceedings going to the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County. In addition, the program celebrated four-year standouts Dalton Hughes, Austin Madeja, and Toby Welk with Senior Day honors. That trio of seniors combined for eight hits, eight RBI, and seven runs scored in the two games.

In the opener, Welk got the Nittany Lions on the board with a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the first inning. It was his seventh homer of the season and the 28th of his career.

Madeja extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth after reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring Justin Welch from third. Hughes followed with a single to center field to score Tyler Kreitz and Madeja, putting Berks ahead 4-0.

The Wildcats got back into the game with three runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Berks responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to build a comfortable five-run cushion. Dante Salerno lead off the inning with a single through the right side, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mason Pennypacker drove in Salerno with a single up the middle. He too then stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Noah Kurtz drove in Pennypacker with a single and Kreitz came around to score when the ball was mishandled by the center fielder. Madeja capped off the scoring with a single to center to bring in Kurtz.

Laudenslager turned in a phenomenal performance on the mound to pick up his third win of the season. The sophomore right-hander only had 1-2-3 inning, the rest of the team he worked out of jams all day. Penn College got a runner on third in the top third, but Laudenslager forced a ground out to second to get out of it. In the fourth, the Wildcats had runners on second and third with just one out. But Laudenslager got a grounder to Welk at short and he nailed the runner at home. The next batter lined out to second to end the threat.

In the sixth, Penn College had a home run, followed by three consecutive hits to score two runs and put runners on second and third with no outs. Another run came in when Laudenslager got a grounder to short, which Welk threw to third base to get the runner trying to advance from second. The following batter popped out to second and the final out of the inning came on a foul fly to Eric Gale behind the plate.

Laudenslager's final line was 10 hits allowed and three runs surrendered, while striking out four batters in a complete-game effort.

In the second game, the Wildcats jumped out to an 8-1 lead after four and half innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Berks started showing signs of life with four runs to make it an 8-5 deficit. Salerno drove in Hughes with a single, Welk scored on a balk for the first two runs of the inning. Gale had a sacrifice fly to score Salerno and Welch single to left center to bring in Pennypacker.

Berks got to within one run (8-7) when Pennypacker tripled to right center to score Salerno and Tate Yergey in the sixth. The Nittany Lions took their first lead of the game after pushing five runs across the plate in the seventh. Hughes roped a line drive single to right field to bring in Kreitz with the tying run. Salerno walked to force in the next run, while Pennypacker beat out an infield single for the third run of the inning. Two runs came around to score on an infield single by Gale to give Berks a 12-8 lead.

Welk added a sacrifice fly to score Kreitz for an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Wildcats got their first batter aboard in the ninth and he later came around to score on an infield single. Ethan Ketterman slammed a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left to make it 13-12 with just one out. Reliever Drew Skrocki remained calm and got a pop up to Nick Esz in foul ground, followed by a slow roller to Welch at second for the final out.

Skrocki picked up the win with 2.2 innings of relief, he struck out one batter. Justin Butler did not allow a run in 1.1 effective innings, while Corey Hennessey allowed two hits and one unearned run in 3.0 innings. Hunter Sentz tossed the first two innings of the game and struck out four batters.

Pennypacker finished 4-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run scored. Welk was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Kreitz finished 2-for-3 with two runs.Yergey and Hughes each added one hit and scored twice.
