Baseball splits with John Jay on Thursday

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Penn State Berks baseball team split a doubleheader with John Jay College on the final day of the Ripken Experience on Thursday afternoon. The Nittany Lions grabbed a win in the first game by a score of 15-4, but the Bloodhounds won 5-4 in walk-off fashion in the second game. Berks finished its annual Spring Break trip with a 5-3 record.

In the opener, Justin Butler earned the victory with 4.0 innings of scoreless relief. The junior right-hander scattered three hits and struck out a career-high five batters to earn his first win of the season. Jamie Glass struck out one batter in the opening two innings of the game and Dale Murphy had a pair of punch outs in the final inning.

Tyler Kreitz went 3-for-3 with a triple, five RBI, and one run scored, while Eric Gale was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Mason Pennypacker finished 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Toby Welk was 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. Joe Gramignano and Dalton Hughes (2 RBI) each tallied two hits at the top of the order.

In the second game, John Jay scored four runs in the final two innings to earn a comeback win. They got a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the walk-off victory.

Welk was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Hughes went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Pennypacker also recorded a pair of hits.

Corey Hennessey made his pitching debut for the Nittany Lions, going 6.1 innings and striking out four batters.

The Nittany Lions are scheduled to play Penn State Harrisburg in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m.
